Super Day!

A WONDERFUL day of learning in grade 2!!!  We practiced having book discussions with our partners, giving (and accepting) specific feedback as writers, and using the "make a 10 strategy" for subtraction.

This would be a good one to practice at home...

Give your kids some subtraction facts to do where the first number is greater than 10.  Then, subtract an amount less than ten.  For example, 17-9= ___.  As first grade mathematicians, we could just use our fingers or count backwards to solve.  But, in second grade, we can think about this question more flexibly.  We know that 17-7=10 in a snap (I hope!)  and we know that we would still have 2 more left to subtract, because we were supposed to subtract 9 altogether.  So, 10-2=8.

See the steps?

17-9=____
17-7=10
10-2=8
so, 17-9=8!

Try these...  15-8= ____  14-6=____  16-7=____

This is just another strategy to help kids to think more flexibly about numbers.

We also learned The Continent Song to help us remember the 7 continents and 5 oceans.  I included a picture so that your child can try singing it to you... ;)

Remember... Friday is pajama day!!!
